1) Labrador Retrievers, among the American Kennel Club's Sporting Group, were bred to retrieve hunters' game, especially from hard to reach areas.
2) These beautiful dogs love water: playing in it, sitting under sprinklers, gulping it down. In fact their hair is dense and nearly waterproof.
3) Large and powerful yet gentle natured, labs average between 55 to about 80 pounds. They reach a height of approximately 22.5 inches, shoulder-high. And they boast strength and endurance characteristics.
4) Many of these labs feature soft chocolate-colored eyes, thick long tails and coats that are most often either black (the most common color), yellow, chocolate or white
5) Labs, especially under three years of age, need lots of exercise. So a large, fenced in back yard or other play area is a must.
6) These loveable beasts need a good diet with plenty of protein in their dog food as well as ample servings. Check with your vet for targeted amounts and times for feedings.
7) Although labs may be stubborn at times (aren't we all!) most of them make for fantastic pets, especially with kids. Before you bring one home, spend time doing your homework and visiting with the dog to make sure the temperament is fine
Note:
Use caution if you have small children. When these dogs grow to their full size, their tails can knock youngsters over. Plus labs don't realize they aren't small and their body weight can knock over a youngster just walking by and rubbing into them in a friendly manner. No harmful intentions here, just loveable over-zealous activity J
8) Train your lab as early as you can to exhibit good behaviors like no jumping on people (they can be knocked over). And keep up their grooming: clean hair, trim nails as needed. Get appropriate pet tags for license, rabies, etc. |
